10 November 2015; Nottingham, UK: New equipment from Copley Scientific makes it easy and straightforward to test the performance of semisolid pharmaceuticals used principally for dermatological therapies, in accordance with the latest United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) specifications. The Vertical Diffusion Cell Test System Model HDT 1000 comprises a compact unit with 10 test stations that enables the precise control of test conditions required, combined with two new Vertical Diffusion Cells that allow for simple, reproducible analysis. Used together these enable efficient and accurate testing in accordance with the specifications in USP chapter <1724>.
USP chapter <1724>, admitted in the first supplement to USP 37, introduced compendial methods specifically for the performance testing semisolids for the first time. These are defined as creams, ointments, gels or lotions for topical application, designed to deliver a localised therapeutic effect. The unit can also be used for permeation studies on transdermal patches as per the EMA “Guideline on quality of transdermal patches” effective 17th June 2015.
With a compact, two-cell width, front to back layout, the HDT 1000 allows easy access to every cell in the test station, while at the same time minimising the bench space required for test equipment. Utilising a precision heating block, it allows the precise control of temperature and agitation speed via a magnetic stirrer bar in each individual cell, thus eradicating the “spaghetti” of tubing and bulky water bath typically used on other cell-based systems.
Two sizes of Vertical Diffusion Cell are available corresponding to the Models “B” (11.28 mm diameter, 7 mL capacity) and “C” (15 mm diameter, 11 mL capacity) described in the USP. Both cells feature a unique clamping system to replace the conventional clamps used on traditional cells to simplify cell preparation and are also fitted with a side sampling arm to facilitate bubble-free filling, sample withdrawal and media replacement.
All cells are supplied complete with individual cell tops for both “open” and “closed or occluded” operation. Various synthetic membranes for use with the cells are available on request.
