APSD for Metered Dose Inhalers (MDIs) & Breath-Actuated Inhalers (BAIs)

The Aerodynamic Particle Size Distribution of an MDI or BAI will determine where the particles in the aerosol cloud are likely to deposit following inhalation. If the particles are too large they will catch at the back of the throat. Too small, and they will be exhaled rather than deposited.

The instrument of choice for measuring the APSD of MDI or BAI products to meet both regulatory and pharmacopoeial requirements alike is the cascade impactor.

There are five different cascade impactors/impingers suitable for the assessment of APSD, however, only the Andersen Cascade Impactor (ACI), the Next Generation Impactor (NGI) and the Multi-Stage Liquid Impinger (MSLI) appear in both the US and European Pharmacopoeias.

Vertus Plus

  • Multiple inhaler testing device types supported (inc. NGI, ACI, DUSA and waste shot collector)

  • Automatic device weighing via an integrated analytical balance

  • Device shaking is precisely controlled, completely configurable and repeatable

  • Firing force can be adjusted for ultimate control

  • User control via an intuitive touchscreen display

Product Features

  • Multiple inhaler test devices are supported. These include the NGI, Andersen Cascade Impactor (ACI), DUSA and waste shot collectors. Vertus can also be configured to support custom devices.
  • Shaking is performed using closed loop control, which assures that the required motion is achieved. It is precisely controlled, completely configurable and repeatable.
  • Firing can be configured to apply up to three distinct forces per actuation. These are typically used to set forces that detect, insert and fire the canister.
  • Data collection records the key parameters during each test. Results can be stored locally, to a USB device or to a Local Area Network (LAN).
  • Touchscreen Display. Test methods are programmed using an intuitive touchscreen display. Once approved and saved, each method can be recalled.
  • Automatic Weighing. An integrated 4 or 5-place Mettler Toledo analytical balance is used to collect shot weight data at any point of the method.
  • The inhaler is securely clipped into a holder, which in turn is clipped onto the Vertus. This allows most styles of inhaler to be supported without the need to remove the canister from the inhaler.
  • Safety standards are complied with: moving parts are enclosed and an emergency stop is easily accessible.
